FAVORITE AUTHOR
One of my most favorite authors is Diana Gabaldon. In 2006 I read the six gigantic volumes of her Outlander series: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, the Fiery Cross, and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. I highly recommend these books and this author. The author goes to great depths, and successfully delivers, obscure and interesting details of facts, folklore, cuisine, culture, magic, medicine, travel and technology of the period, from the pre-Jacobite era in Scotland in the early 18th Century through the pre-Revolutionary War era in the American colonies in the mid 1700s, with a touch of time travel through a stone circle in the mid-1900s thrown in for good measure. She writes with such attention to detail each volume is a major undertaking (the books range between 600 and 1200 pages each) but with all those words there is also the advantage that the characters come alive, you can hear their voice, be swept into their adventure, and the drama lives beyond the length of a single book. I've heard that in 2008 she will be unveiling a graphic novel of the Outlander series and is working on the seventh volume, An Echo in the Bone, that will continue the saga of Claire and Jamie. Diana is an extremely interesting author. She has three degrees in science and was a former university professor. She has written, not just this Outlander series, but also two other Lord John Books, as well as scientific articles, journals, textbooks and Disney comic book scripts.
